Chapter 10

Jasmine didn't think she had ever gotten Ilenia's phone number, but it wasn't hard to guess where she would be. Athos' arrest had shocked and fascinated everyone, and that included the people who had always worked for him. Everyone who had been at the fashion show had stayed to see what happened next, basking in the chaos that came from such a high-profile arrest. Jasmine was pretty sure that there was a bigger audience to witness the fiasco than the people who turned up initially for the actual show.

She felt awkward in the ill-fitting, unreleased dress that had not been chosen for her, but there was no time to lose. Now that there was a body, the intensity of the case had ratcheted up, and she felt more pressure than ever to solve it. Eyes would be on this case now that Athos had been taken in, and though most of them wouldn't be pointed at Jasmine specifically, she knew people would look for answers. She may be one of those in the best position to provide them.

She saw Ilenia from across the crowd, hanging around some of the other showcase girls. All of them kept looking to the stage as if they were waiting for someone to step onto it and explain what was going on. No one did, but that didn’t deter them from looking in that direction every few seconds. She found it tougher than usual to move through the crowd. People weren’t as tightly packed as they might have been, but most of them stood solidly in place and seemed reluctant to budge to let anyone through. On her way past, Jasmine caught only bits and pieces of conversations. All of them seemed to be about Athos, and many of them expressed surprise at the fact that someone had been murdered. It was a stark reminder that the case had been eating away at her—the people in Blackwood Cove hadn’t even known that there was a murder to be worried about until someone had been called in for questioning. It must have been even more jarring for them than it had been for her.

Ilenia was the first to turn to Jasmine when she got to the edge of their little group. She even stepped aside, as if she knew she was the one Jasmine would want to talk to.

“You disappeared,” Ilenia said. “Everyone wanted to know what happened, and we thought you might have answers, but you weren’t here. Did you go with them when they took Athos in?”

“No, there was an incident with a spilled drink,” Jasmine answered. “I only came back because I needed to talk to you.”

“To me? Why?”

“I got some additional information on the case. Do you remember that ribbon you gave me that used to belong to Bellina?”

“Sure. We all wore them for a while. I only had hers because she gave it to me to hang onto before a show, and I never gave it back.”

“Natalia said that you had the original length of ribbon.
